Heavy Construction Equipment Technology (HCET)

The Heavy Construction Equipment Technology (HCET) program provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the heavy construction equipment industry as technicians prepared to deal effectively with the demands of today's advanced technology in this expanding field. Safety issues, maintenance principles, and repair techniques are core elements found in each course. These basic constructs are extended to diagnosing malfunctions and implementing corrective action to systems found on heavy and light construction, excavation, paving and compacting machinery.

Electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, as they are applied to power trains and diesel engines, are studied extensively. Preventive maintenance schedules and procedures are stressed as well as system troubleshooting, which includes component testing and repair. Students are also trained in computer usage and computerized control applications.

Industry support for the HCET program has been significant. Technicians, service managers, and other supervisory personnel from local dealerships developed the entire curriculum. They have pledged support in the form of trainers, equipment, and facilities to ensure student access to the latest knowledge and technology.

Career opportunities include technician positions at dealerships, contractor firms, and leasing companies specializing in the earthmoving, highway construction, mining, quarry, agricultural, and forestry industries. Other options include field service/sales representatives for equipment or engine distributors, and service writers, warranty writers, parts managers, service managers, and training instructors at dealerships.

Graduates will be able to:

  • secure entry level technician positions;
  • troubleshoot complex heavy equipment systems;
  • deal effectively with electrical and hydraulic systems;
  • interact effectively with customers;
  • implement and promote a safe working environment;
  • develop and implement preventative maintenance plans.
