WHY SHOULD I USE THE LEARNING CENTER?
Why not? It’s free, and it’s an opportunity to gain further understanding of course material and possibly earn a higher grade. Hundreds of students utilize the services of the Learning Center every semester.
HOW MUCH DOES TUTORING COST? Tutoring is FREE to all registered HACC students currently enrolled in classes.
WHAT SUBJECTS ARE USUALLY OFFERED? Tutoring is commonly available for all levels of math (from basic math through calculus, including statistics, trigonometry, and principles of math), English (grammar, writing, and ESL), chemistry, biology (and A&P), accounting, psychology, and computer information systems. Other courses are offered based on tutor availability.
WHEN IS TUTORING AVAILABLE? During the Spring and Fall semesters, tutoring hours are typically offered Monday through Friday, mornings, afternoons, and some evenings. Weekend hours may also be available. During the Summer semester, tutoring is available Mondays through Thursdays.
DO I NEED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR TUTORING? Check with your specific campus.
WHO ARE THE TUTORS? Peer tutors are students who have successfully completed the courses they tutor and were recommended by their instructors. Professional tutors hold at least a bachelor’s degree, and many are adjunct instructors on campus.
WHAT KIND OF MATH HELP CAN I GET? Tutors can help you work through problems that are similar to ones on homework or review sheets, strengthen computation skills, practice problem solving, and highlight important concepts and material.
WHAT KIND OF ENGLISH HELP CAN I GET? Tutors can help you plan and focus your paper, suggest ways of clarifying thesis statements and arguments or strengthen conclusions, point out repeated grammatical, mechanical, and punctuation errors, provide guidance with documentation, and provide references to textbooks and electronic sources. We are not an editing or proofreading service.
WHAT OTHER SERVICES & RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE? Numerous software packages are available on Center computers for students to use at their convenience. Currently, students can work with several mathematics and algebra, grammar and writing, and anatomy programs. Most Centers also have informational handouts on a variety of learning skills, such as note-taking, time management, study tips, and test prep.
WHAT IS SMARTHINKING? Smarthinking is an online tutoring service currently being provided for FREE for all HACC students. It offers tutoring in math (all levels), economics, accounting, chemistry, Spanish, and writing for all subjects. For login information, students can visit the Learning Center.
