Frequently Asked Questions:
What is an internship?
An internship is a supervised career related training/learning experience that will allow you to apply the knowledge and skills you have gained in the classroom to real-life work situations. It is a way to develop a work history and strengthen your resume.
What are the benefits of an internship?
An internship can help you:
- Obtain practical hands-on training and experience in your chosen field of study.
- Increase your marketability upon graduation.
- Establish professional work contacts for future networking opportunities.
- Explore a career path or work situation to see if it is the "right fit" for you.
- Increase your professional and personal maturity through exposure to an actual work environment.
Can I receive academic credit for an internship?
Yes, many of our programs have supervised internship experiences incorporated into their curriculums, while others offer them as optional elective courses. Academic credit for all internships is approved and granted by the student's academic division. Your internship performance will be evaluated and a grade assigned. The number of credits awarded will vary according to the academic program.
When should I do an internship?
Internships are normally completed near the end of your program of study when all pre-requisite requirements have been satisfied.
What are the pre-requisite requirements for participating in an internship?
The pre-requisite requirements will vary according to your academic program. Most programs require the completion of certain courses and a minimum GPA. You will need to check with the Internship Course Instructor.
Do I have to pay for an internship?
Students are required to pay tuition for internships for which academic credit is granted just as they would for any other course. An internship that is developed as an Independent Study requires an additional $50.00 fee.
Can I do an internship just for the work experience?
Yes, that is another option. As a service to students and area employers, Career Services does post information regarding internships for a work experience only in a separate notebook in the Career Services Center. See your career service representative at your campus. While these opportunities may be worthwhile and relevant to the student's career choice, the college cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are structured. The student is solely responsible in determining if the work experience will meet their personal learning objectives. Sites posted as a work experience only may not have been visited by the Internship Coordinator or a College representative.
Will I get paid?
Internships may be paid or unpaid. The employer determines the pay rate or stipend.
Should I consider only those internships listed by Career Services?
No, students can also consult with their Academic Professors and Department Chairs, investigate opportunities posted on other websites, or initiate their own internship through direct company contact. Remember, if you wish to receive academic credit for your internship, your Internship Course Instructor must first approve the internship experience.
Will I be guaranteed an internship position?
Internships are not guaranteed. They are competitive. Students go through the same screening process that employers use when selecting new employees. Selection is entirely up to the employer.
Will an internship affect my financial aid?
Financial aid recipients must include internship wages as income for all reporting purposes. Students should check with the Financial Aid Office regarding their standing before starting the internship process if they have questions regarding their eligibility.
How long does an internship last?
An internship normally lasts for one semester. It can be done in the fall, spring, or summer as long as the pre-requisite requirements have been completed. The hours will vary, but are normally between 15-20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. A summer internship may involve additional hours.
What is the Student Internship Agreement Form?
The Student Internship Agreement Form is a liability release that is signed by the student and witnessed by their Internship Course Instructor or a Career Services Staff member, once the student has accepted an internship position.
How do I get started?
The internships currently listed online are primarily in the Harrisburg area. Students attending any of the other regional campuses should contact the Internship Coordinator at their campus location.
