Work Study

What is VA Work-Study?
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Student Work-Study Allowance Program permits eligible persons to work at a Department of Veterans Affairs facility, an educational institution performing VA related work, or other non-VA organization performing VA outreach work only.
Who is eligible?
An eligible person must be receiving 3/4 time or more benefits under any active G. I. Bill (Chapters 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 1606, 1607). Eligible veterans will be considered depending upon the availability of VA-related work at the school or in the area. Note: Eligible persons who have reached their delimiting date or exhausted their education benefits are no longer eligible for the work-study program.
What is the current hourly wage?
VA Student Work-Study allowance payments are currently $7.25 per hour based on the higher of the Federal or State minimum wage. Payments are made directly to the veteran and are untaxed. Veterans who work 25 hours per week will receive a payment of $362.50 every two weeks.
How many hours can be worked?
An eligible person may work up to 25 times the number of weeks in their enrollment period at an Institution of Higher Learning (IHL). The aggregate amount of service is limited to 1300 hours in any 12-month period not to exceed 475 hours of service in any one semester. Work may be performed during vacation periods and semester breaks of less than a calendar month as well as the actual period of enrollment.
How are payments made?
Payment to work-study participants is made for each 50 hours worked. Payment at the end of the agreement will be paid for any balance of hours worked which is less than 50 hours.
Where are positions available?
Positions are available in the Military & Veterans Affairs Offices at all five HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College campuses and at several Federal and State VA-related offices in the Harrisburg area. Positions are available for work between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.. Work hours are flexible depending on class schedules. Training for the positions is provided.
