Online courses, also referred to as Web or Internet courses, are defined as courses offered over the Internet. Basic technology needs are a computer, a Web browser and an Internet connection. Instructors will identify the particular technology needs of a specific course (e.g., some courses may require the use of a certain browser plug-in, such as QuickTime", or a specific software package).
HACC's online courses follow the normal semester schedule. Most online courses have specific due dates, but allow you the freedom to access the course at times convenient to you and your schedule. Successful online students are self-motivated and possess the self-discipline needed to manage their time effectively. Some online courses do require visits to one of HACC's campuses for orientation sessions, proctored exams or complete labs. These requirements are noted in the course information on the schedule. Some classes might require you to participate in an online chat session which would dictate times you would need to be online to meet with your instructor and classmates.
HACC uses Blackboard (WebCT) as our official Course Management System (CMS), though most math courses and Spanish are hosted in other systems. The Online Student Handbook provides a link to a Blackboard (WebCT) orientation class you might visit to get a feel for how WebCT works. For more information see the Online Student Handbook.
