Community Invited to Celebrate Kwanzaa at HACC

The public is invited to Harrisburg Area Community College to celebrate Kwanzaa on Friday, December 1, from 6-9pm, and Saturday, December 2, from 10am-7pm. New to the celebration this year is the presentation of Awards of the Nguzo Saba (The Seven Principles) of Kwanzaa. HACC and Life Esteem, a training/consultant organization, will honor seven community members or groups who exemplify one of the principles of Kwanzaa. The awards ceremony will take place Friday evening.

Friday's celebration also includes presentations by HACC's African American Student Association, followed by dramatic readings, and a Community Art Exhibit by SisterArt. A celebratory feast of Kwanzaa, the Karamu, will conclude Friday's program.

Saturday's events begin with a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at 8am. The competition will continue until 5pm in HACC's James Evans Physical Education Center. Participants and spectators alike are welcome to take part in the celebration in the Cooper Student Center between games.

Saturday's entertainment and activities in the Cooper Student Center are scheduled as follows:

  • 11am - Workshop: Color Consciousness in the African-American Community‹presented by James Felton, Director, Office of Multicultural and Minority Student Affairs for HACC
  • Noon - Black Achievers Gospel Choir
  • 1pm - Writer's Wordshop Players
  • 2pm - Southside Steppers, from Crispus Attucks Center in York
  • 3pm - Imani Edu-tainers ‹ African Dance Troupe
  • 4pm - Jazz music with Jimmy Wood and Friends: Ronnie Waters,
  • Clyde Lucas, Keith Mohler, Diane Wilson, and Tim Warfield
  • 5pm - Fashion Show by ABW Productions
  • 11am - 5pm Children's Room Activities: face painting, crafts, storytelling, aerobics, African dance, and more. Hosted by Harambee UCC, Saturday Church Culture School, the Harrisburg City Recreation Department, and HACC art students.

A variety of food and merchandise vendors will also be available. From 10am to 2pm, health agencies along with HACC nursing students will be offering health screenings for glaucoma, blood pressure, cancer risk assessment, and cholesterol.
