First graduating class for nurses at Gettysburg Campus

Dec. 16, 2004
The first group of nursing students to graduate from HACC at the Gettysburg Campus received their nursing pins today. The ceremony recognized 22 students who completed HACC's nursing program, offered in its entirety at the Gettysburg Campus beginning in 2003. The group will officially graduate at HACC's winter commencement ceremony January 8 at the college's Harrisburg Campus.

Marilyn Teeter, coordinator of the HACC nursing program at Gettysburg, congratulated the group of 22 "who have successfully passed the rigors of the HACC nursing program, which qualifies them to take their licensure exam to become registered nurses (RNs) and to work as graduate nurses in our community."

An additional 30 students, who have completed their first year of nursing education at HACC, were presented with a stripe for the sleeves of their student uniforms. The stripe designates them as second level associate degree in nursing students. Also during the ceremony, Patti Sager received the academic Excellence Award from the HACC-Gettysburg Leadership Council, Jane Reed received the Leadership in Nursing award from the HACC-Gettysburg Nursing Leadership Council, Kim Marion received the Art of Nursing award from the Nursing Student Organization and John Price received the Excellence in Nursing award from the HACC-Gettysburg faculty.

HACC's registered nursing program at the Gettysburg Campus was developed through a partnership with Gettysburg Hospital and was implemented in January of 2003. During the pinning and striping ceremonies, the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation recognized individuals and businesses for their "generous contributions to establish the Gettysburg Hospital Health Care Learning Center at HACC-Gettysburg" and to generate nursing scholarships through the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation. Recognitions were presented by Gettysburg Hospital President Kevin Mosser, M.D., and Kris O'Shea, R.N., M.S., vice-president for patient care services at Gettysburg Hospital.

"Community support for our nursing program has been remarkable," said Teeter. "In addition to the generous contributions made through the Gettysburg Hospital Foundation, our program has received scholarship donations and funding from individuals, businesses and organizations.

Gettysburg students gain clinical experience through the cooperation of a wide range of area health care institutions, including Adams-Hanover Counseling Services, Beverly Healthcare, Chambersburg Hospital, Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg Lutheran Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Green Acres Adams County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hanover Hospital, Homewood at Plum Creek, Lutheran Home Care Services, Mountain View OB-GYN, Waynesboro Hospital, Wee Care Learning Center and York Hospital."

HACC also offers registered nursing programs at its Harrisburg and Lancaster campuses. The HACC associate of arts degree in nursing program first opened at the Harrisburg Campus in 1969.
