Gettysburg Campus sponsors Hispanic art exhibit

Aug. 27, 2004
Gettysburg Campus HACC will observe Hispanic Heritage Month with a display of art works by students from the Center for Human Services' (CHS) migrant and seasonal farmworker education and training programs. The exhibit will run from September 8 through October 28 at HACC's Gettysburg Campus, 731 Old Harrisburg Road. A reception to meet the artists will be held on Thursday, September 16, from 12 noon to 1 pm. The exhibit and reception are open to the community.

Included in this exhibition are flower paintings the students executed while studying the art of American painter Georgia O'Keeffe; Ojos, a traditional Mexican creation that has deeplysignificant meanings; and photographs produced in a workshop at Common Ground on the Hill at McDaniel College.

This exhibition has been prepared by Rob Bass, ESL (English as a Second Language) and art instructor at the Gettysburg Learning Center of CHS, with Alijandrina Colon, Project Coordinator. Bass explained that the main goal of CHS is to prepare students to take the GED (General Education Diploma) examination.

"One component of our multi-level curriculum is Teaching English Through Art, a program designed to not only teach art appreciation, techniques, and English, but also to broaden one's awareness of self and others. The art projects the students at CHS create are used to decorate the facility. That serves as a visual reminder of the skills and information learned in art class, and it reinforces the notion that learning can be fun and rewarding," he said.

The Gettysburg Learning Center is the flagship school of University Research/Center for Human Services' migrant and seasonal farmworker education and training programs. The Learning Center has branch schools in Gettysburg, New Oxford, York Springs and other locations. The age range of the students is 18 to 60, with most in their early 20s. Support for their programs is provided by the High School Equivalency Program, funded through the US Department of Education/Office of Migrant Education.

The CHS art exhibit is one of a series of events planned by HACC's Gettysburg Campus in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, including a Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Wednesday, September 29, 6:00-8:00 pm. Art exhibit hours are 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday. For more information, call 717-337-3855.
