Lebanon Campus of HACC will host 9th AnnualPA German Heritage Festival

The Lebanon Campus of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) will host the 9th Annual Pennsylvania German Heritage Festival this month. It is free and open to the public.

This celebration of culture and traditions of the Pennsylvania Germans will be held at the HACC campus on 735 Cumberland Street in Lebanon on Saturday, March 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festival will be highlighted by traditional Pennsylvania German crafts and artists, music and a play in the Pennsylvania German dialect, delicious Pennsylvania Dutch food, and a children's story corner.

A variety of organizations providing Pennsylvania German genealogy, history and language resources will participate in the festival.

The schedule of events includes Der Dolpehock Sanger Chor performing "Daer Wu Letscht Lacht," a play in the dialect, at 9:30 a.m.

Pennsylvania German music will begin at 10:20 a.m. with Die Beind Bush Sanger, with songs in Pennsylvania German.

At 11 a.m., Mark Edward Achtermann will present "Johannes Christian von Schlegell, Farmer and Agent," a living history presentation.

Keith and Karlene Brintzenhoff will present Pennsylvania Dutch songs and humor at noon.

At 1 p.m., Commonwealth Speaker Dr. Irwin Richman will present "The Flower and Garden in Pennsylvania German Art."

Die Schwadore Schalle, a group of young people who sing in Pennsylvania German, will take the stage at 2 p.m. with Pennsylvania German music and songs.

At 3 p.m., Commonwealth Speaker Dr. David Eller will make a presentation, "What Makes the Plain People Plain?"

The festival is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Community of Lebanon Association, and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.

The festival is a project of the Pennsylvania German Studies Program at HAAC for a greater appreciation of Pennsylvania German history, culture and language.
