HACC will host second annual Wellness through Natural Living Conference

Jan. 12, 2005
A one-day conference at HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, explores how natural wellness and a healthy environment influences our lives. HACC s second Conference for Wellness through Natural Living will offer practical ideas attendees can use today to make their lives better and healthier. They will learn easy ways to de-stress their lives, tone and stretch their bodies, and rejuvenate their spirits. Sources for books, classes and practitioners also will be available.

The 30 informative sessions will take place at the C. Ted Lick Wildwood Conference Center on HACC s Harrisburg Campus from 8am to 6pm Saturday, April 23.

Participants will be able to choose from six concurrent sessions each hour. The conference concludes with a final workshop of stress-reducing interactive drumming. Keynote speaker will be David Rakel, M.D., director, University of Wisconsin Center for Integrative Medicine and assistant professor in the Department on Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin s Medical School.

Speaking on Relationships, Resonance and Resiliency: How Wholism Beats Prozac with Fewer Side Effects, Dr. Rakel will talk about healing, what it is all about, what makes it happen, the impact of relationships and social support on health, how mind-body influences impact our health, and how we can enhance our immune systems so we can be more resilient.

A graduate of Andrew Weil, M.D. s ground-breaking Program of Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, he will help attendees understand what Integrative Medicine is and how it will improve health care in America. Dr. Rakel is editor of Integrated Medicine, a text written to help medical providers combine conventional and complementary therapies into conventional care. He is board-certified in family and holistic medicine and sits on the American Board of Holistic Medicine.

He started his career as a rural family doctor in Driggs, Idaho, where he was in private practice for five years before completing a two-year fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center with Andrew Weil, M.D.

The final session, Livin in the Rhythm, is a workshop and closing ceremony with Mark Seaman of Earth Rhythms. This interactive drumming and music workshop will help to reduce any stress and increase attendees positive immune system factors and their sense of well-being.

Seaman will bring a selection of world drums and percussion instruments so that all can join in. Attendees are welcome to bring their own drums. Livin in the Rhythm will be a fun hands-on experience in community building, developing listening skills and learning new ways of communicating.

Cost is $75 and includes healthy vegetarian and non-vegetarian buffet lunches and refreshments. Also included are over 25 exhibits to explore and a goody bag with items and handouts from presenters. There will be 20 minutes each hour to enjoy exhibits.

Ten-minute massages will be available, and many workshop presenters will be on hand to answer questions and sign books.

Registration deadline is April 8. Early registration is encouraged. Information is available by calling 717-780-2678 or visiting HACC's Website below.
