Lancaster to host Flamenco dance performance

April 1, 2005
Local group Cocina Flamenca brings Flamenco's beauty and soul-filled beats in an improvisational performance to the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, on Sunday, April 17.

The second performance in the Lancaster Campus' Cultural Performance Series will begin at 3 p.m. in the community room of the East Building, room 203. The campus is located at 1642 Old Philadelphia Pike.

"Flamenco is an art form rich in history and tradition that got its start among the gypsies of southern Spain," explained Lori Friedlander, a Cocina Flamenca dancer. "It is filled with passion, fire, grace and beautiful rhythm. Because it is improvisational, each performance is always lively, fresh and invigorating."

Cocina Flamenca, based in Harrisburg, is made up of two dancers, two guitarists and two percussionists. Although various members of the group have been performing together since the early 1980s, Cocina Flamenca has been together for about three years.

The dance performance is one of a variety of art forms that HACC's Lancaster Campus is experimenting with as it builds a Cultural Performance Series, according to Mike Corradino, assistant dean, academic affairs.

"As we get started in Lancaster, we are trying to find our own niche and to what our audience is most receptive," he said. "Ultimately, our goal is to raise awareness that the Lancaster Campus of HACC is open to everyone."

Tickets for the performance are $4 for adults or $2 with a HACC ID. Children 12 and under are free. Although tickets will be available at the door prior to the performance, advance purchases can be made at the Business Office, located in the main building on the Lancaster Campus.
