Students can explore careers in culinary arts during HACC summer camp

July 13, 2005
High school students interested in what it takes to succeed in a career in culinary arts, should enroll in a four-day culinary arts camp experience at the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.

Scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 18 - 21, the camp is open to students ages 15-18 and costs $125.

Participants will have the chance to learn culinary prep and service, as well as baking breads, desserts and pastries. Also included is a field trip to Sysco Foods of Central Pennsylvania.

"This will be an excellent opportunity for high school students to have some fun and take an exploratory approach to considering culinary arts as a future career," explained Chef Tim Harris, coordinator of the camp.

Campers who enroll in the culinary arts program at HACC after they graduate from high school have the opportunity to work in the new student-run restaurant which is scheduled to open in January 2006 at the International Place on Third and Chestnut Streets in downtown Harrisburg.

"The new facility will provide first-hand, real-world experience in a very competitive curriculum," added Harris. "This expansion of the culinary arts program means, for the first time, we will add such elements as study in baking and pastry."

The full-service restaurant will have a Mediterranean look and feel, complete with a brick oven, a bakery and a meat and cheese shop. The dining area is designed to include a chef's table for special food preparation demonstrations. A contribution from Benjamine Olewine and his family made the new venture a reality for the college.
