Tony Waag's TAP CITY brings its razzle dazzle to the Rose Lehrman Arts Center stage

Tony Waag's Tap City will showcase the best of the annual New York City Tap Festival in a performance at HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College. The group performs on Thursday, January 19 at 7:30 pm in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center theatre. The event is sponsored by the HACC Foundation. A free community Tap Jam is offered on Wednesday, January 18, at 6:30 pm at the Arts Center. Call 780-2545 to register.

Backed by a trio of top-notch jazz musicians, legendary tappers, contemporary soloists, cutting-edge groups and up-and-coming hoofers take the stage in a celebration of America's most virtuosic and entertaining art form. TAP CITY, is touring North America with an international cast of legendary tap veterans, cutting-edge tap soloists, and up-and-coming young talent drawn from a list of performers who have been featured in The New York City Tap Festival since it's inception in 2001.

Each summer, at the New York City Tap Festival, hundreds of tap dancers gather from around the world to teach, study, perform, collaborate and explore the art of tap dance. TAP CITY is a mesmerizing celebration of tap dance that promotes the virtues of community, individuality, and diversity, regardless of age, race, culture, gender, social and economic background. It is the preeminent tap dance festival of the world and is the quintessential celebration of our collective American heritage - virtues that are certainly evident in tap's hometown, New York City.

Tony Waag is currently the executive producer and director of TAP CITY, the New York City Tap Festival which he founded in 2001, along with Hoagy Bix Carmichael and the late Gregory Hines. In 1986 he founded the American Tap Dance Foundation (formerly known as the American Tap Dance Orchestra) with Brenda Bufalino and the late Charles "Honi" Coles. He co-created and operated, with Ms. Bufalino, Woodpeckers Tap Dance Center which became a model for numerous tap organizations and tap studios worldwide and created the first International Tap Dance Hall of Fame honoring the contributions of legendary tap dancers by preserving their legacies for future generations to enjoy.

A free Community Tap Jam for ages 12 years and up is planned for Wednesday, January 18 from 6:30 to 8 pm. This event is free but space is limited and pre-registration is required. Call 780-2545 to register.

The TAP CITY performance is Thursday, January 19, at 7:30 pm and is recommended for ages 7 and up. Tickets are $27 adult/$22 senior citizen/student and $12 for ages 7-12 years. RLAC Box Office (717) 231-ROSE (7673.
