Billy Colbert, Fractured Fairy Tales, Mixed Media Works at Rose Lehrman Art Center Gallery

Sept. 12, 2006
Fractured Fairy Tales, an exhibit of mixed media by Washington DC artist Billy Colbert, is on view at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center Gallery, on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, September 25 through October 20. Impressions of popular culture are the subjects of these layered prints and mixed media paintings. The artist will give a brief lecture at 5:30pm on September 28 in room 124 in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center; his talk will be followed by a reception in the gallery at 6:15pm.

According to the Bronx River Arts Center, Colbert's work has "found a graceful visual language to discuss the atrophy of contemporary society: its irony and its maladroit humor." His work is "influenced by the Harlem Renaissance, Pop Art and Graffiti Art movements of the 20th Century."

Billy Colbert has exhibited all over the country. His most notable solo exhibitions have been museum shows at the African American Museum in Dallas, Texas and the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington, Delaware. His work is in collections such as the African American Museum in Dallas and the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, Washington DC and The Washington Convention Center.

Colbert received his MFA in painting from the University of Delaware in 2000, where he was a Presidential Fellow. He teaches at American University and has taught at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. He is the co-founder of Cubicle 10, an art gallery in Baltimore.

Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday, 11 am to 3 pm; Tuesday and Thursday evenings 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm; and during selected performances. For information call 717-231-ROSE or 717-780-2435.

The Rose Lehrman Arts Center Gallery receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
