Captivating portrayal of Mamie Eisenhower planned for luncheon; HACC and Red Hat Angels are hosts

Sept. 13, 2006
Dust off your saddle shoes and shake out your poodle skirt! HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, and the Red Hat Angels of Hanover will host a lecture and luncheon featuring a one-woman, costumed portrayal of Mamie Eisenhower. All those who attend are encouraged to dress in period clothing of the 1950s.

"Mamie in Gettysburg" and a Special "Red Hat" Luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, October 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Community Room on HACC's Gettysburg Campus at 731 Old Harrisburg Road.

The event features recollections of Mamie Eisenhower's first meeting with Ike, trials and tribulations of marriage, war, politics, the presidency, and their life together in Gettysburg. The face-to-face dramatization portrays her as a symbol of her time and an idea of womanhood that relates well to those over 50, yet her story and humor are enjoyed and understood by all ages.

Ruthmary McIlhenny, who has trained and volunteered as a guide at the Eisenhower National Historic site in Gettysburg for 15 years, will present the monologue. Her anecdotes about Gettysburg's most famous couple include insights from historical research, oral histories, and personal meetings with members of the Eisenhower family. Tauck Tours has called the 35 to 45 minute performance "Stellar!"

McIlhenny, who also is a HACC instructor, has delivered the performance to enthusiastic audiences in the past as part of the College's Adult Living and Learning seminars.

The cost of the performance and the luncheon is $25. Make checks payable to "HACC" and mail to HACC Gettysburg Campus, Continuing Education Division, 731 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325. For more information or to register with MasterCard or Visa, call 717-338-1010.
