HACC announces winners in 2006 high school Mathematics Contest

The Hershey High School mathematics team placed first at the 2006 High School Mathematics Contest hosted by HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College. One of the students on the team placed third in the highest individual score category. This is the 16th year HACC has hosted the contest, held at the Harrisburg Campus.

The Hershey High School team, including David Katzman (senior), Yufeng Guo (junior) and Thom Dimmock (sophomore) competed against 18 other Central Pennsylvania high school teams in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

The Hempfield High School team, comprised of Scott Iles (senior), Jonathan Conway, (junior) and Ethan Galebach (sophomore), placed second.

Third place was a tie between Cumberland Valley High School, including Paul Russ (senior), Mike Lengel (junior) and Sterling Miller (sophomore), and Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School, Tony Lun and Brian Soulliard (both sophomores) and Lee Kennedy-Shaffer (freshman).

Hershey High School Senior Katzman placed third for highest individual math score. Hempfield High School junior Jonathan Conway tied with Lee Kennedy-Shaffer, a freshman from Mechanicsburg Area Senior High.for the highest individual math score. Also from Hempfield, sophomore Ethan Galebach placed second in overall high score.

Along with the math contest, HACC also hosts a computer contest each November for high school students as a way of developing the local talent throughout the counties that HACC serves.

"The HACC faculty design and coordinate a number of events throughout the year to raise awareness of the programs available at HACC. Among the most popular with local high schools are the academic contests," said Ron Young, HACC vice president, academic affairs.

"The math contest provides an opportunity for talented high school students to showcase their skills and gain recognition for themselves and their school," said Young.

High schools participating in the event included Annville-Cleona High School, Camp Hill High School, Central Dauphin High School, Cumberland Valley High School, Dauphin County Technical School, Delone Catholic High School, East Pennsboro High School, Hempfield High School, Hershey High School, Lower Dauphin High School, Mechanicsburg High School, Middletown Area High School, Northern High School, Palmyra High School, Shippensburg High School, Susquehanna Township High School, Susquenita High School and West York Area Senior High School.
