HACC Gettysburg offers variety of community education classes and trips

Oct. 10, 2006
Bus trips about the Civil War led by Licensed Battlefield Guides, conversational Spanish, an exploration into Adams County's hidden treasures and a class about online auctions are among the community education classes and trips offered this fall at the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.

Getting Started in Online Auctions will be offered on two Thursdays, Nov. 2 and 9, 7 to 9 p.m. Cost is $49.

Those ready to turn that attic trash into cash will learn the mechanics of selling items online. Topics covered include how to list items, determine postage, set prices, capture and add photos and handle the mechanics of record keeping. Instructions also will be provided for fixed-price online selling (eBay stores and Half.Com). Special notes will be given on how to accept credit cards and avoid fraud.

Battle of New Market: "The Contest was Hotly Sustained" will be a bus trip to New Market, VA, departing Gettysburg Saturday, Nov. 4, 7:30 a.m. Cost of $89 includes bus (and not the $6 museum admission fee).

Best known for the participation of the VMI cadet corps, there is much more to the story of the battle at New Market, VA, on May 15, 1864. Participants will follow in the footsteps of John C. Breckinridge, Franz Sigel and their armies, as the group explores the areas that make up the battlefield and get to know some of the men who fought there.

Conversational Spanish II will be offered Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Nov. 1-29, 6 to 8 p.m. (no class Nov. 22). Cost is $125.

All of HACC's non-credit language classes are designed for those 16 years of age or older. They are a great opportunity to learn basic or advanced language skills to enhance employment qualifications or satisfy personal growth.

Famous Fighting Units will be offered Saturday, Nov. 11, 9 a.m. to noon. Cost is $30.

The two armies at Gettysburg were composed of excellent material, and some of these regiments, brigades and even divisions and corps had stellar combat records. This class will trace the history, organization and actions of some of these more famous fighting units in both armies during the first two years of the conflict leading up to the battle of Gettysburg - perhaps to some startling conclusions.

Adams County's Hidden Treasures will be offered on Thursday, Nov. 16, 7-9 p.m. Cost is $25.

Everyone knows Adams County is known for the Gettysburg battlefield, but this class will delve into hidden treasures - beautiful, scenic and interesting places in Adams County. Some highlights include The Adams County Fruit Belt, Michaux State Forest, Appalachian Trail, the slate railroad bed, the statue of Mary Jameson, a man-made lake, old stone and wooden bridges, early churches and cemeteries, creeks, parks, historical markers and other landmarks that many may not be aware of.

Battle of Spotsylvania: "If it Takes all Summer" is a class and tour about the Battle of Spotsylvania, the second and most costly of the confrontations between Grant and Lee in Virginia in 1864. Cost of $89 includes a class on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6-9 p.m., then a tour of the battlefield in Spotsylvania, VA, Sunday, Dec. 3, with bus departing at 7 a.m.

These are only a few of the many community education classes and trips available through the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, located at 731 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg.
