This winter's lineup includes classes on Gettysburg history, journaling, home repairs for women, Valentine's flower arranging, winemaking, beginning drawing, conversational language and American Sign Language, to name just a few.
Gettysburg - Not the Place to Fight will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 1, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $25. This class delves into General Meade's instructions to General John F. Reynolds. Contrary to popular belief, Reynolds understood Meade's intent not to commit the Army of the Potomac to Gettysburg. Per Meade's instructions, ". . . General Reynolds finds himself in the presence of a superior force. He is instructed to hold the enemy in check and fall back slowly."
Conversational Spanish I will be offered Thursdays, Feb. 1- March 22, 6-8 p.m. at the Gettysburg Campus. It also will be offered in Hanover at South Western High School Mondays, Feb. 5-April 9, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $125.
Conversational Italian I will be offered Tuesdays, Feb. 6-March 27, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $125. All language classes are designed for those ages 16 and above and most often taken for travel, employment advancement or to satisfy personal growth.
American Sign Language I will be offered Tuesdays, Feb. 6-March 27, 6-8 p.m., at New Oxford High School. Cost is $125. Included are finger spelling, formal signs, pantomime gestures, facial expressions, body movements and speech to convey meaning in ordinary conversation.
Journaling for Fun/Relaxation will be offered on Wednesdays, Feb. 7-21, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Cost is $55. This class covers how to write, draw and use collages and time-lines for a creative journal.
Valentine's Flower Arrangement will be offered Tuesday, Feb. 13, 6-9 p.m. Cost is $29. This is a lecture/demonstration from an experienced floral design teacher. Participants will get to choose their own flowers ahead of time, then make their own centerpiece.
Making Homemade Wine will be offered on Thursday, Feb. 15, 6:15-9:15 p.m. Cost is $50. It will be repeated by HACC's York Center on Thursday, Feb. 22, 6:15-9:15 p.m.
Winemaking can be just a simple as baking cookies. All it takes is patience and imagination. This class will explore the concept of homemade winemaking, using some of the season's best ingredients to make personal flavors that are sure to delight everyone's taste buds.
Drawing Basics: Beginner will be offered Wednesdays, Feb. 21-March 14, 1-4 p.m., and also on Thursdays, Feb. 22-March 15, 5-8 p.m. Cost is $99.
This basic drawing course for the beginner teaches approaches to drawing including contours, gestures, proportion study, shapes and more. It includes utilization of a variety of tools including pens, pencils, markers, charcoal and/or conte crayons. Class covers all subject matter including landscapes, portrait, still life and abstract. Materials list will be provided.
Home Repairs for Ms. Fix-It will be offered at the Gettysburg Campus of HACC on Thursdays, Feb. 22-March 29, 7-9 p.m. Cost is $75. The class will be repeated in Hanover, Mondays, March 19-April 30, 7-9 p.m., at Emory H. Markle Intermediate School.
This class will teach women simple plumbing repairs such as changing a faucet or replacing faucet washers, unstopping drains or stopping a running toilet. Participants will learn basic electrical repairs such as changing a light switch or installing a dimmer switch, grounding a plug, tracing circuits and odd jobs such as plaster repairs, installing security devices, dry wall repairs, finding wall studs and what to include in a basic tool kit.
The Battle of Antietam is a class that will be offered Wednesday, Feb. 28, 6-9 p.m., with follow-up trip to Antietam on Sunday, March 4, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Cost is $99.
On Sept. 17, 1862, two great armies collided along Antietam Creek near the town of Sharpsburg, MD. The Battle of Antietam was the climax of General Robert E. Lee's first invasion of the North, and nearly 25,000 Americans were listed as casualties. What did Lee hope to accomplish by invading the North? Who won the battle and how was it fought? These and other questions will be addressed in this look into the Antietam Campaign.
