McGuinness was inspired by the kidnapping and imprisonment of hostage Brian Keenan in 1986 and his story is the basis of the script. HACC TheatreWorks will present the play at 8 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday, November 16 and 17 in the Studio Theatre (room 104) of the Rose Lehrman Arts Center, on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.
Directed by Theatre Professor Marnie Brennan, "Someone Who'll Watch Over Me" focuses on three captives, played by Thomas Abraham and Ryan Hays, both HACC students, and David Bailey, a professor at HACC's Gettysburg Campus, who are kidnapped and held hostage by unseen Arabs in Lebanon. They strive for survival; they also strive to overcome their personal and nationalistic differences. Cut off from all outside contact and fearful of their uncertain futures, these three men find strength in their friendship as they learn to live in captivity. This is not a political diatribe that takes sides and attributes blame, but a finely drawn portrait of three ordinary men who became caught up in a war they barely understood.
"Someone Who'll Watch Over Me" features an abstract set designed by Dave Olmsted, Theatre Scenic Designer/Production Manager, complemented by lighting designed by Lori Friedlander, Theatre Technical Director, and costumes designed by HACC Theatre Instructor, Paul Foltz. This play is not appropriate for children under the age of 13. <There will be no admittance after the play begins.
