Elementary kids head to HACC "college" for spring enrichment programs

Jan. 4, 2008
Youngsters in grades 3-5 can explore sensory science, engineering and architecture in a new spring "Kids College Discovery Day Series" offered at the Lancaster, Harrisburg and York Campuses of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.

The spring series is an extension of the popular Kids' College Summer Enrichment program. Each program runs from 9 a.m.-noon on a Saturday and includes instruction, materials, hands-on application, and - most importantly - a fun learning experience. The cost per session is $25. The programs are offered through HACC's Community Education Center.

In York, kids can "Discover Architecture" by examining skyscrapers, bridges and tunnels at the York Campus on March 15.

Here's the lineup for the programs offered at the Harrisburg and Lancaster campuses:

January: Discover Sensory Science. Science can cover every letter of the alphabet. For example, the letter "A" stands for aerodynamics, the letter "B" stands for biology, "C" stands for chemistry and "P" stands for physics. Explore the systems of science from A to Z and discover the scientist inside each of us. Sessions are Jan. 19 in Hall Technology Center of the Harrisburg Campus and Jan. 26 in the East Building of the Lancaster Campus.

February: Discover Engineering. Each participant will be asked to imagine a concept, use the Solid Works Computer Aided Design software to design and then build it. Sessions are Feb. 2 at the Harrisburg Campus and Feb. 9 at the Lancaster Campus.

March: Discover Architecture. Skyscrapers can be amazing, bridges fascinating and tunnels aren't always underground. Sessions are March 1 at the Harrisburg Campus and March 8 at the Lancaster Campus.
