HARRISBURG - David Grindle has a varied career that has taken him from San Diego to Boiling Springs, where he works as an independent sculptor and exhibits his work in this region. The local glass and metal artist will be the September featured craftsman at Radius, HACC Gallery and Museum Shop.
An open house with the artist will be held 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14. Light refreshments will be provided.
Grindle has collaborated with such renowned talent as glass artist Dale Chihuly, helping him with the exhibit, "Chihuly Over Venice," that was featured in a PBS program special.
Other collaborations have been with Nancy Rubins, UCLA professor of sculpture and Italian artist Mauro Staccioli.
One of his local projects was the repair of the Holocaust Memorial sculpture on Front Street in Harrisburg in 2006. Grindle fabricated and installed major components for the damaged public sculpture.
His work is currently part of the juried Art of the State 2008 exhibit at The State Museum. In 2004 he won first place in the Art of the State exhibit for the sculpture, "Trojan Elephant," a life-size baby elephant made of welded steel.
Grindle has also earned first and second place in juried exhibitions with the Art Association of Harrisburg.
Grindle started his career as a craftsman, working as a welder in San Diego. After 14 years as owner and operator of his own shop, he became an artist welder, collaborating with sculptor Italo Scanga at the artist’s studio in San Diego. He later moved to central Pennsylvania where he has worked as an independent sculptor since 2001, developing his distinctive style under the influences of Picasso and the Cubist Jacques Lipchitz.
Radius, HACC Gallery and Museum Shop, Third and North streets in Harrisburg in The State Museum of Pennsylvania, is a partnership of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College and the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission.
