HACC adopts resolution in memory of Senator Rhoades

Nov. 6, 2008
Harrisburg, PA – At the Nov. 4 meeting of the HACC Board of Trustees, members unanimously passed a resolution in memory of the late Sen. James J. Rhoades, M.Ed., of Schuylkill County in recognition of his lifetime of service as a tireless champion of educational opportunities for all Pennsylvanians.
Senator Rhoades, who was an educator before being elected to serve the 29th Senatorial District from 1980 until his death on Oct. 18, was a long-standing friend and supporter of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, as well as a tireless advocate of education for all Pennsylvanians.
The resolution also recognizes Senator Rhoades as one of the General Assembly’s foremost authorities on education issues and worked to enact major education reforms, including the Pennsylvania Safe Schools Act, the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletics Accountability Act, the Teacher Continuing Professional Education Act, and the Head Start Supplemental Assistance Program. He served on the state Board of Education and Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education and was chairman of the Senate Education Committee.
The resolution further recognizes Senator Rhoades as an early and visionary advocate for workforce and economic development, playing a leadership role in designing Pennsylvania’s highly successful Keystone Opportunity Zone (KOZ) Program.
