HACC and Theatre Harrisburg collaborate for summer musical "The Boy Friend"

July 3, 2008
Theatre Harrisburg and the Theatre Program at HACC announce a first-time collaboration for a summer musical. The organizations will jointly present “The Boy Friend” by Sandy Wilson at HACC’s Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Public performances will be presented 7:30 p.m. July 23-26 and 2 p.m. July 27.

Set in the French Riviera, the Jazz Age lives on in this light, romantic spoof of 1920’s musical comedy. Polly, an English heiress attending Mme. Dubonnet’s Finishing School, falls in love with Tony, a delivery boy. Things get complicated but a happy ending is in store for all.

The show’s many memorable roles include the flirtatious Mme. Dubonnet, her boy-crazy students and Polly. With its catchy tunes, period dances (including the inevitable Charleston) and winning sense of humor, “The Boy Friend” is a sparkling, tongue-in-cheek 1920’s romp in the spirit of “No, No, Nanette.”

“The Boy Friend” cast is comprised of students from HACC and other regional colleges and high schools, as well as veteran Theatre Harrisburg performers featuring (in alphabetical order) Amanda Abrom, Alec Brashear, Natalie Gan, Laura Gingerich, Ciara Harper, George Heigel, Jennifer Hillman, Cathryn Hintze, Stacie Johnsen, Amanda Krepps, Jonathan Lawson, Rachel Lewis, Andrew Lutzkanin, Kevin Pry, Ashton Ramos, Adam Newborn and Ken Robinson.

The show is directed by Tom Hostetter, long-time artistic director of Theatre Harrisburg. Musical director is Eric Dundore, choreography by Judy Williams Henry also both of Theatre Harrisburg. Set design created by Victor Cappecce, Adjunct theatre instructor at HACC and set designer for Theatre Harrisburg. Stage manager and producer is Sonya Mink of Theatre Harrisburg, Assistant stage managers are Christopher Wallen, HACC theatre student and Maggie Futato of Theatre Harrisburg. Costume design is by Paul Foltz, adjunct theatre instructor at HACC and costumer at Theatre Harrisburg. Lighting design is by Lori Friedlander, HACC theatre technical director. Dialect coaching is by Marnie Brennan, HACC theatre professor. Hair/wig design is by Diane Rothrock of Theatre Harrisburg. Accompaniment by Ruth Sweigart of Theatre Harrisburg.

The show is sponsored by The Shearer Family Fund of the Foundation for Enhancing Communities on behalf of R. Scott and Kathy T. Shearer.
