HACC announces winners in 2008 High School Mathematics Contest

HARRISBURG - Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School’s mathematics team placed first at the recent 2008 High School Mathematics Contest hosted by HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. This is the 18th year HACC has hosted the contest, held at the Harrisburg Campus. Cumberland Valley placed second and Hershey was third.

The Mechanicsburg team of Tony Lun and Lee Kennedy-Shaffer, both juniors, and Andy Nauss, a sophomore, competed against 15 other central Pennsylvania high schools in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Members of the Cumberland Valley team were senior Sterling Miller and sophomores Michael Lou and Chunya Huang. Senior Mu-Chen Li, junior Sam Weil and sophomore Jonathan Katzman comprised the Hershey High team.

Individuals with the highest mathematics score included Mechanicsburg’s Kennedy-Shaffer, first. Hempfield senior Ethan Galebach second, and Annville-Cleona senior Bradley Weaver, third.

Chris Fowler, Ph.D. dean of the Mathematics, Science and Allied Health Division thanked the students and their teachers for coming to the annual competition. Before handing out the awards, he commended the students on their interest in mathematics and excellent level of knowledge.

Students from Camp Hill, Cedar Crest, East Pennsboro, Gettysburg, Greenwood, Middletown, Milton Hershey, Northern, Shippensburg, Susquehanna Township and Susquenita also participated in the contest.
