HACC-Lancaster, The Janus School announce partnership

'FLITE' program to be launched in August at the private school
May 1, 2008
LANCASTER - Post-secondary students can take an educational “FLITE” through a new partnership between The Janus School, an independent day school, and the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

The educational partners will launch “Foundations of Learning Independence through Education” in August, with the 10-month transitional program open to all area post-secondary bound students in Lancaster. Study includes time management, note- and test-taking skills, organizational skills, goal setting and problem solving. Students may enroll for a semester or the full academic year, attending classes at Janus from 8 a.m.-noon and taking college courses at HACC’s Lancaster Campus in the afternoon, evenings or weekends.

The public is invited to attend parent/student information sessions at The Janus School, 205, Lefever Road, Mt. Joy. Two sessions are scheduled:

  • 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7
  • 7-9 p.m. Monday, June 2

Michael C. Corradino, Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at HACC’s Lancaster Campus, and Debra Kost, Head of The Janus School, say the partnership mirrors each school’s mission of community outreach that provides educational opportunities for lifelong learners.

“HACC is a partner college that is willing to facilitate enrollment in the participants’ targeted college classes, while Janus is providing wrap-around services for students in those HACC classes with the expectation these students more likely will succeed,” Corradino says.

“HACC’s open admissions and enrollment policy makes the college a natural partner for these students,” he adds.

The HACC-Janus partnership will “provide support to students during their first year or two of a college or post-secondary program,” Kost says.

Unlike the Janus core program that focuses on students in grades 2-12 with learning differences, FLITE does not require students to be diagnosed as a prerequisite for enrollment. However, a student must be accepted to and enrolled in at HACC and complete the Janus admissions process in order to participate in FLITE.

“Janus will provide the necessary remediation based on the placement tests from HACC and cover planning for short- and long-term assignments using the students’ syllabi from their classes as well as help them study for tests and quizzes,” Kost says. FLITE “is an intensive program to keep students on track in college.”

The cost of the half-day program at Janus is $9,000 for August 2008-June 2009 academic year, and does not include transportation fees or residential costs. In addition, students at HACC pay $188 per credit, which includes tuition and all fees. More information on registering for fall classes is on the Registrar page. Follow the guides.
