Hanover man earns 2nd in National Apprentice of the Year Competition

Harrisburg, PA – Joshua McMaster of Hanover recently was named second-place winner in the National Apprentice of the Year Competition in Atlanta, earning $2,000 and tools valued at more than $1,500.
McMaster, an Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) student at HACC’s Midtown site, was among 24 national competitors who underwent three intense days that included a written test on the National Electric Code, properly wiring a motor control panel for a simulated elevator problem, bending conduit to within one-eighth inch, and troubleshooting. He was sponsored by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the IEC.
Only one competitor from each regional chapter can participate in the annual competition, and must qualify through local testing and hands-on wiring competitions. In addition, each competitor must have completed four years of classroom training in the IEC’s Apprentice Electrician Program.
After graduating from Spring Grove High School, McMaster went to work for Swam Electric Co. Inc., Hanover. He was sponsored by his employer to apply for the IEC Apprenticeship Program.
The program provides top-notch training, which is paid for by the employers. Apprentices work full time and attend class two nights a week.
The Central Pennsylvania Chapter IEC includes merit shop and union-free independent electrical contractors in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties.
