Harrisburg, PA – Here’s what’s ahead at Radius, HACC Gallery and Museum Shop on the ground floor of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Third and North streets. Radius, a partnership between HACC and the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission, is the central location for unique and original craftwork made in Pennsylvania. All items are crafted by HACC students, members of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen or other talented artists from around the state. All the items on display are for sale. Featured Showcase: Creative Kitchen
Featured Craftsman: Paul Hoch of Carlisle, wood carving
Hoch began carving wood 20 years ago, and since then has carved a few hundred primitive Santas as well as roosters, dogs, birds and bird trees. His style is inspired by Pennsylvania German Fraktur art with its ornate lettering and highly decorated birds, tulips and hearts.
Holiday Open House: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13. Hoch will give a demonstration from 1-3 p.m.

Featured Showcase (through February): Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen: Juried Ceramicists
Featured Craftsman: Thom Bissey of Dillsburg, ceramics
Ceramic art by Bissey is all one of a kind. Working from his studios on Long Beach Island in New Jersey and from his rural hideaway in Pennsylvania, Bissey focuses on alternative firing techniques to achieve his finishes. Bissey began his exploration into alternative firings over 30 years ago, beginning with a simple hole in the ground of his backyard in Tucson to elaborate gas and sawdust fired kilns today on the East Coast. Each firing brings something new.

Featured Showcase: Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen: Juried Ceramicists
Featured Craftsman: Doug Starry of Gettysburg, chair making, wood
Starry apprenticed with his father, a master craftsman, by starting with the simple tasks in chair making then took over the business 1985. Although he stayed with the original design, Starry has done some tweaking throughout the years both in design as well as the woods used. He also continues the practice of using no glue but instead pressure fitting the chair together and only using four nails. This is very like the Shaker technique of constructing a chair. With 40 acres, much of it wooded, Starry is able to use many of the trees from his own property.

Anniversary open house and sale: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.
Panel discussion: 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. Free panel discussion by members of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. Topics include history of the guild, getting involved in guild shows and how the guild benefits artists.
