HACC announces winners in 2009 High School Mathematics Contest

Carlisle High School places first in HACC's high school mathematics contest

HARRISBURG –  Newcomers Carlisle High School walked away from HACC’s math contest with first place as a team and two students earned individual first and second place awards.
Placing second was the Mechanicsburg High School team and Cumberland Valley High School came in third in the annual contest in calculations coordinated by HACC’s math faculty at the Harrisburg Campus.
Competing for Carlisle were senior Christopher Ha, sophomore Sunwoo Ryoo and his brother, freshman Sangwoo Ryoo.
The Mechanicsburg team included senior Lee Kennedy-Shaffer, junior Andy Nauss and freshman Sarah Gregory. Third place Cumberland Valley included senior Himesh Lad, junior Michael Luo and freshman Brian Chung.
The Ryoo brothers took the top two individual awards, with Sangwoo placing first and Sunwoo earning second. Third place individual was the senior from Mechanicsburg High School, Kennedy-Shaffer.
Students complete a series of mathematical problems working as a team, individually and in relays. 
Chris Fowler, Ph.D., dean of the Mathematics and Science Division, commended the students on their interest and abilities in mathematics before presenting the awards. He said HACC strives to present a competition that is challenging and fun and appreciates the efforts of high school math advisers for working with students to prepare for the contest.
Students from Annville-Cleona, Camp Hill, Cedar Crest, Central Dauphin, Ephrata, Greenwood, Hempfield, Hershey, Middletown, Northern, Susquenita and Trinity high schools also participated in the contest.
