HACC-Gettysburg celebrates students' accomplishments

Gettysburg, PA - Scholarship winners, graduates and outstanding students were recognized at the annual Student Awards and Recognition Ceremony held recently at the HACC-Gettysburg Campus.
Assistant Dean of Student Services Scott Simonds welcomed the students, families, and scholarship donors in attendance and congratulated students on their accomplishments.
            The introduction featured remarks by Nana Ama K. Baryeh of Gettysburg, All-Pennsylvania Academic Team nominee, who shared reflections and appreciation for her experiences as a student at the Gettysburg Campus. 
            Edward Fleming of Orrtanna was named the Outstanding Transfer Program Graduate and Brian Smiley of New Oxford was the Outstanding Career Program Graduate. Their names will be added to those of previous outstanding graduates on a campus recognition plaque.
            Five students in the Registered Nursing program received scholarship awards. The Gettysburg Hospital Faith Redding Memorial Scholarship went to Cecilia McWilliams of York Springs and Ashley Small of Hanover. Michelle Carter of Hanover received the Tom and Juene McGlaughlin Nursing Scholarship and Peggy Hartman of Gettysburg, received the Esther G. Little Nursing Award. The Twila Charles Memorial Scholarship went to Kristin Thomas of Gettysburg. Practical nursing student Jessica Smith of Hanover received the Margaret Trew Cline Foundation Practical Nursing Award.
            The Gettysburg High School Class of 1950 Scholarship, established in honor of class advisors Ruth Mundis McClelland and the late Col. Jacob Sheads, was presented by Col. Alex Kessel to Penny Breighner and Christopher Haun, both of Gettysburg, and John Kane of Fairfield. Gettysburg Subway, which provides food service at the HACC campus,

awarded the Gettysburg Subway Scholarship to Deedra Guarino of Gettysburg. 
            The Bernard A. Yannetti, Sr. Memorial Scholarship was presented to Erin Belanger of Gettysburg. The South Western Academic Award, designated for students in the South Western or other non-sponsoring school district, was presented to Rachelle Direnzo of Hanover.
            Sherri Haines of Aspers received the Valerie D. Allen Memorial Scholarship, and the VFW Bernard A. Yannetti Sr. Memorial Scholarship award Post 15 Scholarship, designated for a military veteran or the child or grandchild of a veteran, went to John Kane. Hope Groft of Littlestown  received the Outstanding Student Worker Award.
            Valorie Rosi of East Berlin was named Faculty Scholar. Jessica Slagle of Gettysburg, has been accepted into the Bucknell Community College Scholars Program.
Seven HACC students were recognized for achieving Gettysburg Campus Academic Excellence Awards by completing 30 credits with grade-point averages of 4.0. Thirty-six students were congratulated for South Western Academic Awardtheir induction into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society during the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters. 
            Jennifer Weaver, Gettysburg Campus vice president and dean introduced the candidates for graduation in May or August 2009, and graduates from December 2008. Student Government Association club advisors and officers were recognized for their campus leadership.
