Martha Malina joins seven colleagues tasked with establishing regulations under new law

Harrisburg, PA – Martha K. Malina, M.S., NCTMB, director of HACC’s massage therapy training program, has been appointed to the new Pennsylvania State Board of Massage Therapy.
Malina is among six professional members named to the 11-member board, which is tasked with establishing regulations under the new massage therapy law signed by Gov. Ed Rendell in October. She was elected vice chairwoman during the board’s inaugural meeting last month.
The law makes Pennsylvania the 41st state to license massage therapists. It requires the board to begin accepting applications for licensure within two years.
Malina has been director of HACC’s massage therapy training program since 2006. She previously was a massage therapist in private practice at AMR Wellness Associates, Harrisburg, and in Charleston, S.C.
She has a bachelor’s degree in music therapy from West Texas State University, Canyon, Texas, and a master’s degree in counseling and human systems from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla. In addition, Malina earned certification in therapeutic massage and hydrotherapy and sports massage, both at the Florida School of Massage in Gainesville, Fla.
In addition to being credentialed by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, Malina is a professional member of the American Massage Therapy Association.
HACC’s program is a member of the American Therapy Association’s (AMTA) Council of Schools, and its curriculum has been approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. This enables graduates to take the National Certification Exam and become a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, a credential respected throughout the massage industry.
The 675-hour program is available in a six-month, full-time format or a 12-month, part-time evening class. The curriculum prepares individuals with the hands-on, clinical, ethical, business and communication skills that are required to enter the health care field as a massage therapist.
