HACC presents fall line-up of 'green' classes

Sign up now for programs aimed at helping you take advantage of green technology

Harrisburg, PA – Homeowners, renters and professional contractors can get in on the cutting edge of going “green” with a variety of classes offered this fall at HACC’s Midtown site.
The line-up includes focus on green technology, with a 20-hour course for the professional and two one-session courses for homeowners.
  • Elec-tricked: Watt Can I Do? Evaluate your home through the eyes of energy pro during this two-hour course that will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16. Students will learn how to make small changes for big energy savings. Students should bring their electric bills to evaluate usage. The cost is $54. Gary Schubert is the instructor.
  • Going Green in the Garden: Low-cost, Low-energy solutions. Gardeners who want to show off their “green” thumbs will learn how to turn garbage to gold in this class scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. In addition, 55-gallon blue barrels for have been donated by Knouse Foods for students to collect rainwater. A demonstration will be given on how to build a lettuce/spinach growing table. The cost is $67 per person, which includes the barrel for those who want one. Instructors are Bonnie McCann and Jennifer Briggs from Waste Not Energy Advisors.
  • Home Energy Smart: Where Do I Start? Residential homeowners who are considering an energy efficiency makeover will benefit from this course offered from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. Instructors are Bonnie McCann and Jennifer Briggs from Waste Not Energy Advisors. Topics include what is meant by the terms “whole house/building concept” and “energy star designation” and the costs and benefits of an energy audit. The cost is $67 per person.
In addition, a number of green noncredit courses are being planned. Dates, times and cost are to be announced.
  • Photovoltaic (solar energy) training courses include:
  • Fundamentals of electricity (36 hours)
  • Electrical wiring/residential (30 hours)
  •  National electric code (20 hours)
  • Electrical wiring II/commercial (30 hours)
  • Electrical services (30 hours)
  • Photovoltaic systems (60 hours)
Additional courses include geothermal heat pump training (40 hours), wind power and advanced courses. In October, energy auditors training will be offered.
All courses will be held at HACC’s Midtown site, Third and Reily streets, Harrisburg.
