Variety of personal enrichment courses offered in November, December

GETTYSBURG – From history to crafts and the unknown, the Continuing Education division at HACC-Gettysburg Campus has something for everyone’s personal enrichment in November and December.
All classes are offered at the campus, unless otherwise noted.
The lineup of history-related courses includes:
Unexpected Roots: Artists with Adams County Connections, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3. The cost is $25. You might be surprised to learn that some famous artists have local links, including one dubbed the “handsomest man in the world.” In this new class, find out how Elsie Singmaster Lewars, Marianne Moore, Charles Morris Young, Mary Cassatt, Thomas Wolfe, Oscar Shaw and Francis X. Bushman are tied to Adams County.
Ike: The Battlefield Guide, offered 1:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at a cost of $25. You may not be aware that, while he was a resident of Gettysburg, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower conducted many tours of the Gettysburg Battlefield. This new class discusses his interpretation of the most famous battle fought on American soil.
Partnership: The National Park Service and the Gettysburg Foundation, offered 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, at a cost of $25. This new course will cover all aspects of the groundbreaking public-private partnership between the nonprofit Gettysburg Foundation and the National Park Service, which features the foundation operating the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center. Trace the history of the foundation and its broad preservation mission, learn how the foundation and park service work together on a daily basis, and explore what this means to Licensed Battlefield Guides.
Stories of the Underground Railroad, offered 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, at the East Berlin Area Community Center at a cost of $25. Decades before the Civil War began; abolitionists were active north of Gettysburg in the area known as Quaker Valley and Yellow Hill just north of the Mason-Dixon Line. This area was a safe haven for Gettysburg’s black community during the Confederate invasion. Here, members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) worked with local freedman Edward Mathews and Basil Biggs to bring slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad.
Among the variety of general interest courses are:
Self-Publishing Your Book, offered 7-9 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 4-18, at a cost of $59. Learn the pros and cons of self-publishing and whether it is appropriate for your project. Explore the differences between self-publishing, vanity publishing, and lightning press. Learn about editing the manuscript, designing a professional product, finding the right printer, securing a distributor, and marketing the book.
Developing Your Sixth Sense, offered 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the East Berlin Area Community Center, or 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9, at the HACC-Gettysburg Campus at a cost of $25. Students will explore the psychic senses and learn exercises for enhancing intuition and increasing psychic vision.
“Writing a Column” offered 9 a.m.-noon Saturdays, Nov. 6 and 13, at a cost of $59. Look at how newspaper columns differ from each other, and from other types of articles; pick a potential topic and style; and brainstorm ideas.
The World of Angels, offered 1-3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at a cost of $25. This new class will look at the history and types of angels, and discuss angels in the modern era. Find out about Archangels, Guardian Angels, and Angelic Heralds.
Crafts-related courses include:
Fused Art Glass Jewelry, offered 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 9-23, at a cost of $65, which includes the use of tools. Learn to create beautiful art glass jewelry by cutting specialty fusing and dichroic glass pieces, which are then fired in a kiln. Students will purchase glass and wire and pay a nominal firing fee, which must be paid by cash or check on the first day of class.
Introduction to Jewelry Making, offered 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, at the East Berlin Area Community Center, at a cost of $25. This new class will introduce students to the tools needed to get started and how to use them, as well as a variety of materials to create your own hand-made jewelry.
HACC offers a variety of noncredit courses with something for most everyone. Go to
www.hacc.edu and click on Noncredit Courses. There you’ll find a list of what’s offered and when at all of HACC’s five campuses, including Harrisburg, Lancaster, Gettysburg, Lebanon and York.
