April 5, 2010
GETTYSBURG –A two-part presentation, “Collecting Original Art - Impressionism to Surrealism” and “Impressionism, Japanese Influence and the Road to Modern Art” will be featured at the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, on Thursday, April 15.
From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the gallery hallway, Eliot Gminder, a philosophy instructor at the campus, will answer questions and speak about his collection of museum-quality drawings, lithographs and etchings on exhibit at HACC through April 22. Both presentations are part of the HACC-Gettysburg Campus 20th Anniversary Speaker's Series.
Gminder's collection includes original examples of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism and Surrealism by well-known artists including Paul Cezanne, Edouard Manet, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso.
Gminder, who also is an engineer, will provide answers to the two most frequently asked questions about his collection - “Are they real?” and “How do you get them?”
The session will be followed by “Impressionism, Japanese influence, and the Road to Modern Art,” by Robin O’Bryan, a humanities instructor, at 6:30 p.m. in meeting room 120A/B.
The works of Impressionist painters are much loved today, but in the 19th century were highly criticized for their departure from traditional art practices. O’Bryan’s lecture explores the radical changes introduced by Impressionist artists and their debt to Japanese prints, showing how their works ultimately paved the way for modern artistic expression.
The exhibit and presentations are free and open to the community. HACC-Gettysburg Campus is located at 731 Old Harrisburg Road, near Weis Market and Adams County National Bank. For information, call 717-337-3855.
