Harrisburg, PA – Students at the Harrisburg Campus of HACC have something to say about diversity and are inviting the public to join in the dialogue.
The public is invited to attend Diversity Day from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, April 16, in the community room of the Cooper Student Center on the local campus on One HACC Drive. The event is organized by HACC’s Student Government Association and the Students of Wildwood Activities Team.
“The student body was interested in taking on some topics that can help raise awareness and perhaps give people a chance to examine their own perceptions and opinions,” said Sarah Radomsky, SGA secretary. “We’d like to engage the public too. With the panel discussions and a film, we’ll also have dancing demonstrations and lessons, and food prepared by HACC’s International Awareness Club and Mosaico-Latino Club.”
The schedule will include:
10 a.m. – Welcome remarks from HACC Trustees Deep Gupta and Hector Ortiz, Ph.D. Following are a Latin dancing demonstration and lessons with HACC’s Mosaico-Latino Club and HACC student Amanda Batista.
11 a.m. – Discussion on cultural misconceptions presented by students in the International Awareness Club who will share their experiences and perceptions they have encountered about their home country from U.S. citizens.
Noon – Film, “Out in the Silence,” captures the chain of events that unfold when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson’s wedding to another man ignites controversy in his small Pennsylvania hometown. The film illustrates the difficulties that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people can face and to promotes dialogue and action that will help people on all sides of the issues find common ground. A question and answer period will follow.
2 p.m. – Panel discussion about interfaith, presented by HACC’s Islamic Ummah
Club, and the similarities between Judaism, Islam and Christianity, the world’s three major religions. Panel members include Jonathan Gainor and Charles Comer, HACC philosophy instructors who teach comparative religion, Mohammad Nur, board member of the Carlisle Mosque and who converted from Christianity to Islam; Rabbi Carl Choper, executive director of the Religion and Society Center, Harrisburg; Samia Malik, member of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations; and Danielle “Aakifah” Reed, Islamic Ummah Club president.
