HACC announces winners in 2012 High School Mathematics Contest

First place team - High School Math Contest 2012 Competition at regional campuses includes 21 local high schools

HARRISBURG – Mechanicsburg Area High School finished first in the annual mathematics contest at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, with a Lower Dauphin Area High School student earning the individual first-place award.
The 21 high school teams in the recent competition were linked through interactive video at HACC’s Harrisburg, Lancaster and York campuses.
Lower Dauphin High School - Third PlaceHempfield High School placed second and Lower Dauphin High School placed third.
Individual awards were given to the top 10 students with the highest scores.
In first place was junior Ted Meador of Lower Dauphin Area High School. Luke Bent, a junior at LDHS - Ted Meador, first place individual overall scoreHarrisburg Academy, took second place. Coming in third was junior Corey Smithmyer of Mechanicsburg Area High School, who placed third in last year’s competition.
The remaining top 10 finishers and their high schools were: Patrick Yang, a sophomore from Camp Hill; Bryan Yoder, a senior from Hempfield; Chris Spicer, a sophomore from Mechanicsburg Area; Charles Hansen, a junior from Mechanicsburg Area; Saarang Deshpande, a junior from Manheim Township; Vincent Duong, a senior from Harrisburg Academy; and Brian Chung, a senior from Cumberland Valley.
Camp Hill High School Patrick Yang, placed fourth individual overall scoreThe students completed a series of mathematical problems coordinated by HACC’s math faculty. They had to calculate answers working as a team, individually and in relays. This is the 22nd year for the contest.
This year’s participating high schools also included: Annville-Cleona, Carlisle, Central Dauphin, Chambersburg Area Senior, Dauphin County Technical School, Greenwood, Northern, SciTech, Solanco, Spring Grove Area, Susquehanna Township, Susquenita, Trinity and Upper Dauphin Area.
Harrisburg Academy - Luke Bent, second place individual overall and Vincent Duong, 9th place individual overall



Manheim Township High School - Saarang Deshpande, placed eighth in individual overall score
