Artist reception Oct. 2
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – “Casa de la Culture,” photographs taken by – and of – migrant and immigrant families living in Adams County, Pa., is on exhibit in the main art hallway of the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, through Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013.

In conjunction with the Gettysburg Campus Hispanic Heritage Celebration, an artist reception will be held in the main gallery hallway on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

“The power of a simple image to capture the human spirit reminds us that immigrants, seemingly so foreign and unlike us, are really exactly like us. Could be me. Could be you,” said Deepa Fernandez, journalist, founder of People’s Production House, and social activist, in describing the essence of this exhibit. The photographs reveal the importance of faith, family and the basic humanity that binds people together – regardless of language culture or politics. As viewers see themselves in the portraits from birthday parties, schools, homes and farms, they will be encouraged to think about the dreams and struggles of their neighbors as well as new solutions to the ongoing immigration debate in our country.

The photographs are recent, having been taken during the last three years. “We hope that the pictures will be a point of reflection for our entire community – an opportunity to see the realities in Adams County with other eyes, because if we do not learn to see with the other’s eyes, what sense can our own gaze have,” said Jorge Perez-Rico, community liaison and member of Casa del la Cultura.

This exhibit is created in partnership with Casa de la Cultura, an initiative of Project Gettysburg- León, under the direction of Jorge Pérez-Rico and the Center for Public Service at Gettysburg College.
