HACC offers training for warehouse equipment moving specialist

Program begins Jan.13, 2014, in response to need
Dec. 19, 2013

HACC is helping to meet the needs of area logistics industries with warehouse equipment moving specialist training.

The warehouse equipment specialist course is a 62-hour program taken over two weeks, beginning Jan. 13, 2014, with required self-paced online courses. Students have the opportunity to become a Manufacturing Skills Standards Council Certified Logistics Associate (MSSC-CLA) while earning their forklift certification and gaining knowledge and experience in duties associated with transporting and moving goods in a warehouse. The course combines classroom and hands-on training.

Daniel Wagner, managing director of Workforce Training said HACC offers this program in response to the needs of area logistics companies. “HACC’s service area includes Interstate 81, Interstate 83 and Route 15 corridors which currently have an abundance of logistics sites with expansion planned through the coming years. HACC has been in discussion with several of these logistics companies to determine their needs and the course content.”

“An online search of job openings in Dauphin, Franklin, and York Counties shows 47 job postings and a median salary between $14.95 and $15.88 an hour for industrial truck and tractor operators which can include forklift operators. There are additional postings for stock clerks, packagers, and material handlers, all of which can be entry level jobs for local logistics companies,” Wagner said.

The program also covers safety principles, quality control, workplace conduct and teamwork, communication and using computers.

“HACC has partnered with PetSmart and other companies that have existing jobs waiting for students who complete the program,” said Cheryl Deitz, workforce training coordinator. “There is great career potential with the amount of growth in logistics in the region. This program can also be a direct tie-in to continuing at HACC for an associate degree.”

The next session begins Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at HACC’s Midtown 1, 1523 N. Fourth St. in Harrisburg. Additional sessions will be scheduled in York and Franklin County at a later date.

The cost for the two-week warehouse equipment moving specialist training is $1,363.
