'My Family and Other Animals' at HACC's Fenêtre Gallery

'My Family and Other Animals' at HACC's Fenêtre Gallery Exhibit opens Oct. 18 – reception at 6 p.m.
Sept. 18, 2013
HARRISBURG, Pa. – “My Family and Other Animals,”the painting of local artist, Cynthia Nixon, will be on exhibit at the Fenêtre Gallery at HACC’s Midtown 2 location from  Friday, Oct. 18 through Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013. A reception will be held for the artist on Friday, Oct. 18, 6-8 p.m., during 3rd in the Burg.

Nixon’s large figurative works have luminous borders of gold leaf or stitched metallic mosaics. These borders reflect light, movement and sometimes a glimpse of the viewer’s own face. Although the paintings explore allegorical themes, the subjects are very personal: self-portraits and members of her own family, with settings in rural Pennsylvania and the coast of Maine, where she has lived and worked most of her life.

Nixon has a bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College, in Carlisle, Pa., and a master’s degree in education from Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts, in University Park, Pa. In 2004, she took classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Nixon has served as a board member at the Palmer Museum of Art of State College, Pa. Her work is in many public collections including The White House and the Smithsonian American Art Museum inWashington, D.C., Museum of Arts & Design in New York, N.Y., and The Trout Gallery of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA.

Fenêtre Gallery is on the second floor of HACC’s Midtown 2 at 1500 Third St. The entrance to the building is on Reily Street. The gallery is open on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and the third Friday of the month from 6-8 p.m., or by appointment. Events are free and open to the public.
