HARRISBURG, Pa. – HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, shares recent news as well as upcoming events available to the community.

HACC Has Late-Start Classes Available

While the fall semester has started at HACC, it’s not too late for students to register for late-start classes. Late-start classes begin later in the fall semester, specifically on Sept. 8, 2014.

Interested students must apply for admissions, complete a placement test, meet with an academic advisor, register for classes, and if needed, signup for the HACC payment plan. Financial aid may be available; however, payment is due at time of registration. For additional information or assistance, students should follow the instructions on HACC’s website or contact a campus welcome center.

Part-time Job Fair to Bring Employers to HACC’s Harrisburg Campus

A job fair for part-time employment is scheduled for Sept. 3, 2014, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Cooper Student Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC. Admission to the fair is free for students, alumni and the community.

“The part-time job fair gives our students, alumni and the local community a chance to get a collective foot in the doors of potential employers,” said Jean Tucker, campus career and transfer specialist. “Many companies are looking for people to fill full-, part-time, internship and volunteer positions in a variety of jobs, including entry-level and experienced workers. Whether participants are students thinking about what to do after graduation or are already employed, this is a very good opportunity to make significant contacts with local employers.”

The job fair is an opportunity to meet potential employers and could result in on-the-spot job interviews and possible hiring. “I would suggest that individuals who plan on attending will want to prepare an elevator speech. Make sure you know how to introduce yourself to employers in a positive and professional manner,” said Tucker. “Also, participants should dress professionally and bring multiple copies of their résumés.”

For more information, contact Tucker at 717-780-2522 or email jetucker@hacc.edu.

Students, alumni and the community are invited to HACC’s Getting Connected Job Fair on Sept.17, 2014, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Hoffman Community Room at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus.

“This job fair will give students and alumni a chance to find a full- or part-time job and will help expose our campus to the Gettysburg community,” said Howard Alexander III, campus director of counseling. “The number one way to land a job is through connections and leads; that is what we are trying to do here at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus. We are here to help our students and the community to build valuable connections with the goal of having a positive impact on their future.”

HACC’s Getting Connected Job Fair is an opportunity to meet potential employers and could result in on-the-spot job interviews and possible hiring. Participants are encouraged to dress professionally and bring copies of their résumé.

Milt Friedly’s ‘Harrowed Fields’ Displayed at HACC’s Rose Lehrman Art Gallery

“Harrowed Fields and Related Work,” an exhibit by Elizabethtown artist Milt Friedly will be on display in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus from Sept. 3 through Oct. 1, 2014. A lecture will be given by the artist on Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m. in Whitaker 214, also located on the Harrisburg Campus. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the gallery from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

“Harrowed Fields” displays Friedly’s return to creating landscapes in clay, a format that he began in 1980 while studying ceramics at Arizona State University. Works from the exhibit are inspired from aerial views taken in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Friedly records landscapes digitally and references them while creating the clay landscapes. In the “Harrowed Fields” series, Friedly draws with his fingers and nails to create harrows, setting up rhythm and texture that appear controlled, yet spontaneous.

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday and 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, or by appointment. For more information, call 717-780-2478.

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. This exhibit is supported by the Nadar Family Fund.

MentorLinks will help HACC’s program build and sustain the geographic information system (GIS) workforce in Central Pennsylvania. As part of the project, HACC’s geospatial technology program will revise its curriculum to align with the competency model developed by the National Geospatial Center of Excellence. In addition, HACC’s geospatial technology program will develop a suite of workforce offerings for professionals and develop a GIS summer institute for high school teachers.

Geospatial technology students learn to apply GIS skills to various disciplines, such as marketing, urban planning, emergency services and environmental science. “HACC’s program prepares students for groundbreaking jobs for today and ones not yet imagined for tomorrow,” said Nicole Ernst, assistant professor, geospatial technology.
