HACC's Lancaster Campus Adds Carpentry to Roster

New program helps meet demand for carpenters in Lancaster County

Sept. 1, 2016
LANCASTER, Pa. – Career seekers can gain skills to meet the demand for carpenters through a new partnership between HACC’s Lancaster Campus and the Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC).

“Carpenters are listed sixth in the ‘Top 20 Hot Jobs in Lancaster County,’ according to PA CareerLink of Lancaster County,” said Mike Corradino, dean of academic affairs at the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

“Through this partnership, students can enroll in HACC’s Carpentry Diploma Program this fall term at ABC’s training and education center in Manheim and train for a career in this high-demand field in Lancaster County,” Corradino said.

Completion of HACC’s Carpentry Diploma will better position successful graduates to apply for apprenticeships with ABC, find jobs in the field and launch their careers. ABC expanded its training and education space in 2015 to increase apprenticeship training in many trades, including carpentry.

“Carpentry classes start on Sept. 8, with classes held once a week. Students may sign up for classes as they go. This is beneficial for those students who still want to learn more about the field and determine if it is the right fit,” said Corradino.

Students will gain a valuable introduction to the field while earning credit toward their diploma. Classes will cover safety, hand power tools, blueprint reading, building materials and interior and exterior construction and finishes, including roofs, windows, doors, floors and walls.
