June 24, 2020
This story is part of our “HACC Heroes” series. We recognize the severity of the global coronavirus pandemic and its impact on our communities. During this challenging time, we want to thank and recognize some of the many HACC employees, students and others who are making a difference. The hero of this story is HACC’s Student Government Association.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – At HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, we are committed to supporting students in need. The “Groceries on the Go” program was developed to help address food insecurities faced by HACC students during the global coronavirus pandemic.

On June 11, 2020, in collaboration with five grocery retailers, the College provided students the opportunity to pick up one free bag of groceries at one of the following stores:

Kennie’s Market
217 W. Middle St.
Gettysburg, PA 17325

Weis Markets
3885 Union Deposit Road
Harrisburg, PA 17109

Grocery Outlet
2108 Spring Valley Road
Lancaster, PA 17601

Weis Markets
800 S. 12th St.
Lebanon, PA 17042

Grocery Outlet
1500 N. George St., Suite 13
York, PA 17404

The pre-filled bags, valued at $10 each, were provided on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 305 bags were distributed to HACC students.

Megan Kopitsky, president of the Student Government Association (SGA), said, “The SGA felt compelled to support this program because we saw our peers struggling and knew that we were in a position to help. We are always looking for new and innovative ways to support and enhance the student experience, and with so many of our students struggling to make ends meet in light of the pandemic, it was a no-brainer – we were eager to invest in our community in a way that would profoundly impact and help students.”

Thanks to the student leaders in HACC’s Student Government Association, their peers have access to additional food during these difficult times.
