HACC Students Practice Emergency Preparedness Skills

HARRISBURG, Pa. – On April 11, 2023, 95 students at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, spent a day testing their skills under mock emergency circumstances.

Students from the College’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program participated as patients and providers and were evaluated on their ability to think critically, adapt and work as a team. Students in HACC’s Nursing Program also participated by managing mock hospital interactions, interacting with patients and responding alongside EMT students.

Local agencies including Americus Hose Company, Cumberland Goodwill Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Friendship Hose Company #1, Life Lion Flight Services, Lower Allen Township EMS, Susquehanna Township EMS and WellSpan EMS were at the Senator John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center to assist with training.

Alexander Snyder of HACC coordinated the exercise and said, “This day is designed to get students working alongside potential employers in EMS and learn how to interact with different providers and services. Nursing was added this year to give both EMS and nursing students an appreciation of how it is to work alongside one another and create the environment of being healthcare clinicians. By the end of the day, students are more comfortable with responding in high stress environments, managing expectations and creating the comradery of the different aspects of health care and public safety.”

HACC’s EMT Program prepares individuals to work as first responders at the scene of a trauma or medical emergency. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible for their EMT certification exam.

Phlebotomy Technician Students Will Pay Significantly Less in Tuition at HACC’s Lebanon Campus this Summer

LEBANON, Pa. – HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, and the Justamere Foundation are working together to break cycles of poverty through education. The Justamere Foundation has generously donated funds to offset 90% of the cost of tuition, books and the certification exam for students who enroll in HACC’s Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Program at the College’s Lebanon Campus.

Students must pay for program requirements including health immunizations, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification, background clearances and a drug screen.

“We are grateful to the Justamere Foundation for their generous donation and for supporting this vital program at our Lebanon Campus,” said Vic Rodgers, MBA, MBC, HACC’s vice president of workforce development and continuing education. “Students will be able to complete this training in 18 weeks and start a career in health care without the anxiety of student debt.”

Lori Cushman, president of the Justamere Foundation, said, “HACC has worked very hard to provide their students with the skills needed for good paying jobs. Scholarships for these classes don’t always exist under traditional funding programs. That’s a gap we would like to fill. The Justamere Foundation’s mission is to provide the missing funding to make those futures happen.”

Phlebotomy technician courses begin June 12 at HACC’s Lebanon Campus. The program includes a career readiness component to prepare graduates to enter the workforce. As part of the program, students participate in an unpaid 80-hour clinical externship in a healthcare setting before sitting for the National Health Career Association (NHA) phlebotomy technician certification examination.

HACC’s Emergency Medical Technician Program Expanding to Gettysburg, Lancaster and York

HARRISBURG, Pa. - HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will begin offering emergency medical technician (EMT) programs at its Gettysburg, Lancaster and York campuses this summer. High school students who are 16 years and older can take advantage of their summer break and obtain an EMT certificate.

This entry-level training program is for first responders at the scene of a trauma or medical emergency. EMTs provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients. These professionals have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life-threatening emergencies.

The program is offered in two formats – fully in person or blended (a combination of online and in person). Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take their EMT certification exam.

Students can also transfer credits earned from EMT training into one of HACC’s allied health programs if they want to continue their healthcare education.
