Meet Kayla: First-Generation Student Finds Her Path

“I have never been more successful than I am here.”

Kayla, a first-generation college student, tried other schools before realizing HACC would provide her with an affordable pathway to finish her degree.

On her first day at HACC, Kayla said she had to overcome her pride. “I had always thought if I didn't go to a big school, I wouldn't be successful. But I have never been more successful than I am here.”

She added, “I attended two other schools prior to HACC. Both experiences tore me down as a human being. These experiences made me generally very prideful as a character. And my mother would tell you that is my biggest character flaw. After making some serious life changes, I have been shaped into a person with endurance, compassion and faith.”

Now, Kayla is enjoying her time in the Art Program at HACC. She especially appreciates the warm welcome she’s received. “The faculty and staff truly do care about our well-being and academic success!”
