Harrisburg Area Community College's Gettysburg Campus now offers the College's Culinary Arts, Restaurant, and Food Services Management programs, the only one of its kind for residents in the Adams County/Hanover area. The flexibility of the program ranges from high school instruction with collaborative efforts with the Adams County Tech Prep Consortium, to instruction for an associate¹s degree, to noncredit sessions, such as learning the finer points of upscale "tailgating".

New to the Gettysburg Campus, and the driving force behind the Culinary Arts program, is Chef Michael DeVeny, of York, PA. Chef DeVeny brings a distinguished background in culinary arts as a certified executive chef and certified culinary educator from the American Culinary Federation, with an associate's degree in culinary arts from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.

His international experience includes study in Switzerland and Japan. He continues to provide catered food services for the Preakness in Baltimore and has catered for the World Cup Soccer organization.

Classes and accompanying lab sessions for the Culinary Arts program are held at both the Gettysburg Campus and the Gettysburg Fire Company, where students make use of the large commercial kitchen facility, banquet and instructional rooms. At the Gettysburg Campus, students pursue the planning, selecting, preparing, and serving of quantity food, as well as understanding nutrition, use and care of commercial equipment, safety, and sanitation precautions. The program can lead to careers such as chef, baker, restaurant or hotel manager, or careers in catering.

With two million visitors to Adams County, tourism and hospitality is a mainstay of the local economy, creating a need for skilled employees. According to the National Restaurant Association, food service operations will employ more than 10.8 million workers by 2005, making it one of the fastest growing industries in our economy. Many of these new jobs will be high-earning management positions.

The culinary arts program is the third addition to the Adams County Tech Prep Consortium. The cooperative effort between the Consortium and the Gettysburg Campus offers computer repair and allied health, along with culinary arts, to high school students so that they may get a head start on their associate's degree by starting HACC classes before they graduate from high school. Students who have finished high school, or have degrees in other fields of study, can also complete the Culinary Arts degree program.
