The public is invited to Harrisburg Area Community College to celebrate Kwanzaa on Saturday, December 1, from 10am to 7pm. The Kwanzaa Festival will feature jazz and gospel music, dance, and the popular fashion show. Children's activities are scheduled from noon until 5pm. All activities take place in the Cooper Student Center on the Wildwood Campus of HACC.

Highlighting the festival is the second annual Harambee Recognition Awards, sponsored by HACC and Life Esteem, from 10am to noon. Master of Ceremonies Valerie Pritchett, weekend news anchor and reporter for WHTM ABC27 News will present eight awards to community members who exemplify the principles of Kwanzaa. Recipients of this year's awards include:

      UMOJA (Unity)
      Joseph Summers, Program Director
      Harrisburg Area YMCA, Camp Curtain Branch

      UJAMA (Cooperative Economics)
      Tanya Williams-Bell, Rejoice, Inc.

      KUJICHAGULIA (Self determination)
      Rev. James Lyles, Youth Activities Specialist, Community Action Commission

      UJIMA (Collective work and responsibility)
      Smittie J. Brown, Executive Director, Dauphin County Dept. of Drug & Alcohol Services

      NIA (Purpose)
      Ann Lyon, Community Activist

      KUUMBA (Creativity)
      Angela Fulton, ABW Productions

      IMANI (Faith)
      Kathy Ann Corl-Rodeheaver, Keystone Community Mental Health Services

      Characteristics of the Nguzo Saba (Overall winner)
      Edward Baker, Community Member

The celebration's entertainment will begin at noon and will include The Black Achievers Gospel Choir, PRIDE of the Neighborhood Steppers, Writer's Wordshop Players, Imani Edu-tainers African Dancers, Jazz with Jimmy Wood with Diane Wilson and Friends, the Southside Steppers from the Crispus Attucks Center, York, and a fashion show by ABW Productions. Children's Room activities include crafts and storytelling, dance, face painting, and more. Organizations offering free health screenings for blood pressure, glaucoma, and cancer, are scheduled between 10am and 2pm.
