Today, manufacturers are hard-pressed to reduce costs to remain competitive and improve profits in a challenging market place. To help industries meet this challenge, the Lancaster Campus of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) is offering a one-day workshop on "Lean Manufacturing" techniques for managers, engineers, supervisors, team leaders and front-line workers. The full day workshop will be offered Thursday, June 17 and will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lean production is aimed at the elimination of waste in every area of manufacturing. The goals of lean manufacturing are to incorporate less human effort, less inventory, less product development time and less space. In the end, the process helps manufacturers become highly responsive e to customer demand while producing top products.

This introductory workshop will familiarize participants with manufacturing techniques used to identify and reduce manufacturing and administrative waste and costs. It will prepare participants to implement "lean" practices in their organizations to increase profitability, productivity and safety. Participants will

  • understand the seven types of waste
  • Understand the 5S process - Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain. Together, these five simple principles form the basis of the 5S System
  • Complete a process improvement flow chart
  • Learn the importance of implementing a value-added system company wide

The workshop will be taught by Michael Roth, a part-time HACC instructor and continuous improvement consultant and team facilitator. Roth has extensive experience as a Sr. Lean Manufacturing Engineer at the largest independent supplier of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment in the United States, as well as with other local manufacturers.
