HACC, central Pennsylvania's community college, has chosen two of the world's most fascinating cities for its Winter Session Study Abroad Program.

With their destination first Paris then London, college students and members of the community will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons through five distinctly different courses offered from January 2 - 15, 2005.

A qualified, full-time HACC professor will teach each three-credit course, which offers an itinerary of relevant visits, lectures, tours and other cultural experiences. Participants taking the study tour for credit will meet course requirements through a combination of projects and journals due upon their return to the United States. Others may enroll on a non-credit basis, without the credit requirements.

"We offer excellent value for a European excursion," said Marcia Hajduk, HACC professor and coordinator of International Studies. "An added plus is having the benefit of faculty, who will provide an educational component to the site visits."

Kazim Dharsi, AIA, will lead a study of both France and England's buildings, which date back to pre-historic times, in "England's History Through Architecture." The class will focus on how buildings tell stories of time past and are a wonderful way of studying the different histories of a culture.

London provides the perfect backdrop for "Humanities in London," led by Yvonne Milspaw. Students will attend five performances and participate in backstage tours of some of London's most important theatres, making it an outstanding experience for anyone interested in theatre and culture.

Anne McGinley, MS, RD, will lead "Hospitality Industry in London/Paris." The variety of restaurants, pubs, hotels, cultural activities and historic sites available make London and Paris ideal cities to study the hospitality industry. In addition to tours of famous sites, the class will provide some "back-of-the-house" information and insights.

Students can learn the significance of Paris as one of the world's greatest cities of architecture, fine cuisine and history during "History of England." Professor Stefan Williams also will lead the class in the discovery of London's political, cultural and architectural history through a series of lectures, discussions and guided tours.

A tour of police headquarters and a prison dating back to the revolution will take place in the first three days of "Criminal Justice in London." Jim Fox will lead students in an examination of the historical development procedures of the English system and its relationship to the U.S. criminal justice system and security.

The cost of HACC's Winter Session in Paris and London is $2,180 for a student from a sponsoring district seeking course credit. Students from non-sponsoring districts will pay $2,405. Anyone taking a non-credit course will pay $2,075. Fees are subject to change due to currency fluctuations and current costs, or if the tour is being taken for college credits. Payment is due October 15.

The cost includes airport transportation, airfare, hotel accommodations, and breakfast. Also included are all instruction, course work, lectures, course-related trips and tours, a half-day tour of Paris and two or more day excursions.
