In the last ten years there has been an explosion in the making of screened posters promoting independent musicians. Now that bands and single artists alike are producing their own CDs and more and more music is available on the Web, music lovers are no longer exposed to the art they once were in music shops, on LPs and CD covers. Now the art work of these posters follows the music - available on the Internet, according to the recently published book, The Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion.

A number of these posters, hand pulled screen prints promoting independent musicians, are part of the next exhibit at HACC's Rose Lehrman Arts Center Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus. The Poster Show begins Monday, March 13 and continues until Thursday, April 6. An opening reception for the exhibit is scheduled for Wednesday, March 15, from 4 pm to 6 pm. Cooper Troxell and friends will provide music at the reception.

Jay Ryan, one of the artists showcased here, is himself a musician, as well as, a printmaker at the Bird Machine print shop in Chicago. He is also one of the organizers of Flatstock, an international poster conference and on the Board of Directors of the American Poster Institute. The aesthetics of these alt-rock posters are funky, energetic and eclectic - much like the music.

In addition to the screen printed posters, in the exhibit are prints from Yee-Haw Industries. Yee-Haw's work has been honored by inclusion in Print Magazine's Regional Design Annual and is featured in the book The Art of Modern Rock. Prints on view from Yee-Haw are created through the process of letterpress, a method of relief printing utilizing moveable type and relief cut plates. In contrast to the vivid colors of the screen printed posters these works are more textural and starker in their color contrasts.

All Gallery events are free and open to the public. Hours are Monday through Friday, 11 am to 3 pm and during selected performances. For information call 717/231-ROSE.
