For those interested in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician, several EMT classes are being offered through the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center at HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College.

The basic course will be offered this spring at a number of convenient locations within HACC's service area throughout central Pennsylvania, including the following:

Adams County
-- 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, June 23-Aug. 8, at the Adams County Emergency Services Training Facility, 230 Greenamyer Lane, Gettysburg.

Cumberland County
-- 6:30-10 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 30-June 4, with two Saturdays TBA, at the Hampden Township EMS building, 295 S. Sporting Hill Road.

Dauphin County
-- 6:30-10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 29-June 5, with two Saturdays TBA, at HACC's Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center on the Harrisburg Campus.

An emergency medical technician is a staff member of a basic life support ambulance providing routine and emergency care and transportation of the sick and injured. Many students also use the EMT training program to obtain entry level positions in healthcare, emergency rooms and into the private sector.

Upon successful completion of HACC's 140-hour program, participants should be able to perform a number of complex skills such as spinal immobilization, use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), assisting patients with medications, performing patient assessments, performing CPR and taking vital signs. Successful students also will be eligible to test in PA Department of Health practical and written exams.

The certification exam is required to become an EMT in any healthcare setting or in the private sector.
