Traditional and abstract interpretations of tea traditions by Pennsylvania craftsmen will be the inaugural feature of HACC's new Radius Showcase Series. On display at the HACC Gallery and Museum Shop from Saturday, Sept. 1 through Wednesday, Oct. 31, Radius Showcase Series-Tea Traditions will feature items such as teacups, teapots, tea cozies and tea bowls.

HACC will host an open house from 1-3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 9. All items on display will be available for sale. Radius is located on the ground floor of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 North Third Street.

"The reason we chose tea traditions as the focus of our first showcase in the series is because so many craftsmen make teacups and teapots," said Jessica Lantz, curator of arts and assistant manager. "While, traditionally, the designs were purely functional, craftsmen now are making abstract teapots that incorporate contemporary ideas."

One highlight of the Radius Showcase Series-Tea Traditions will be a Japanese-style tea ceremony conducted by Todd Frey of the Geesha Tea House from 11 a.m. to noon and 1-2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Radius gallery. Chanoyu, as the ceremony is called, has played a pivotal role in Japanese history and culture for more than 500 years, influencing other arts, such as pottery making, Zen, calligraphy, flower arranging, garden design, poetry and architecture. Admission to this event is $10, and participants must register by calling 717-780-2414.

The Radius Showcase Series will continue throughout the coming year, featuring topics such as boxes, contemporary quilts, and glass blowing. HACC's Gallery and Museum shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 717-787-5590.
